Trade Exports Predict Regional Ballast Water Discharge by Ships in San Francisco Bay

چکیده

Biological invasions often result from transfers of organisms during trade activities. In coastal ecosystems, commercial ships are a dominant source species globally, and ships’ ballast water (BW) is major focus biosecurity management policy to reduce invasions. While drives shipping patterns, diverse vessel types behaviors exist such that the quantitative relationship between BW dynamics still poorly resolved, limiting both science management. Here, we evaluated new method predict discharge using data, by explicitly considering known practices according commodity type. Specifically, estimated tonnage overseas exports volume for San Francisco Bay (SFB), California, as model system demonstrate this approach. Using extensive datasets on shipborne discharge, (a) spatial temporal patterns across nearly 20 ports in estuary 2006 2014 (b) developed predictive estimate foreign export whole estuary. Although arrivals SFB remained constant 2014, associated exported commodities more than doubled tripled. Increased resulted increased frequency per capita bulk carriers Asia tankers western Central America Hawaii, reflecting shifts direction movement. The top 11 (59% total tonnage) were transported or tankers. multivariate linear model, annual these type strong predictors bay-wide (adjusted R 2 = 0.92), creating potential past future delivery SFB. Bulk provides valuable insights into flux, since most driven behavior tank ships. data unavailable many regions time periods, whereas widely available can provide reliable proxy geographic source, which critical evaluate invasion risk.

Smooth cordgrass (Spartina alterniflora), a tall grass native to the east coast, has invaded Willapa Bay, Washington, and the San Francisco Bay, California. Management with glyphosate and imazapyr can be effective, but in the San Francisco populations, applications in several sites are confined to short periods in the fall in order to protect nesting habitats of Clapper rails (Rallus longirostr...

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in San Francisco Bay.

San Francisco Bay is facing a legacy of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) spread widely across the land surface of the watershed, mixed deep into the sediment of the Bay, and contaminating the Bay food web to a degree that poses health risks to humans and wildlife. In response to this persistent problem, water quality managers are establishing a PCB total maximum daily load (TMDL) and implementa...

Estimates of suspended sediment entering San Francisco Bay from the Sacramento and San Joaquin Delta, San Francisco Bay, California

This study demonstrates the use of suspended-sediment concentration (SSC) data collected at Mallard Island as a means of determining suspended-sediment load entering San Francisco Bay from the Sacramento and San Joaquin River watersheds. Optical backscatter (OBS) data were collected every 15 min during water years (WYs) 1995–2003 and converted to SSC. Daily fluvial advective sediment load was e...

Water quality measurements in San Francisco Bay by the U.S. Geological Survey, 1969–2015

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) maintains a place-based research program in San Francisco Bay (USA) that began in 1969 and continues, providing one of the longest records of water-quality measurements in a North American estuary. Constituents include salinity, temperature, light extinction coefficient, and concentrations of chlorophyll-a, dissolved oxygen, suspended particulate matter, nitrat...

A regional mass balance of methylmercury in San Francisco Bay, California, USA.

The San Francisco Bay (California, USA) is a water body listed as impaired because of Hg contamination in sport fish for human consumption, as well as possible effects on resident wildlife. A legacy of Hg mining in local watersheds and Hg used in Au mining in the Sierra Nevada (USA) has contributed to contamination seen in the bay, with additional more recent and ongoing inputs from various sou...
